Artist Han Choong-seok explores the theme of ‘relationship’ through the concept of ‘glancing.’ The ‘glancing’ portrayed in his characters symbolizes a defensive instinct within relationships. The intense and sharp glances of his human characters have become noticeably softer and warmer after introducing animal figures. The eyes of the animals, which carry a blend of warmth and unfamiliarity, also evolve, becoming gentler and more tender when interacting with a girl.
Han’s unique storytelling about relationships, expressed in his distinct style, broadens your perspective on the world. His working method is also quite distinctive. Instead of using a regular canvas, he directly mounts Gwangmokcheon (a type of cloth made from Korean cotton) onto a panel. Unlike thick, gesso-coated canvas, Gwangmokcheon is thin and uncoated, allowing the paint to absorb deeply into the material.
Han begins his process by soaking paint into a handmade frame to create a richly colored background. On this base, he builds his composition. This unique technique adds remarkable depth to his artwork, creating a signature style that is unmistakably Han Choong-seok.
