프랑스 어로 “순환”이나 “주기”를 의미하며, 연관 된 곡들이 하나의 주제나 아이디어를 중심으로 구성된 형태를 가진 음악적 용어로 사용되는 Cycle. 각 곡은 개별적으로 연주 될 수도 있지만 전체 주제나 아이디어를 완전히 이해하기위해서는 Cycle을 경험하는 것이 이해를 돕는 경우가 많다. 우리는 한 명의 작가와 하나의 전시를 온전히 이해하기 위해서도 이러한 경험이 필요하다 생각하였다. 그리하여 음악적 용어 Cycle를 차용하여 보다 확장된 예술 감상의 기회를 가져보려한다.
근작들을 중심으로 전개되는 전시와는 달리 ⟪Cycle :: 순환•주기⟫ 展 에서는 각 작가들의 2000년대 초 부터 현재까지의 작업들 중 일부를 선별하여 전시한다. 긴 호흡의 시간들 속에 작가들은 확장되고 집중되는 사고의 표현을 우리는 작품이라는 결과물로서 경험해 볼 수 있다.
갤러리 우는 ⟪Cycle :: 순환•주기⟫ 展을 통해 오랜기간 호흡을 맞춰온 마유카 야마모토와 한충석 그리고 새로 소개하는 작가 타마라 뮬러의 작품 활동의 과정과 결과물 들을 통해서 이들 작가의 시간을 함께 경험하고 이해 할 수 있는 시각경험을 가지게 된다.
이들은 물질을 이용하여 개인이 가진 고유한 질서에 의해 의미를 품은 대상인 시각적 언어를 만들어 낸다.
작가의 고유한 질서로 인해 평범한 물질에 지나지 않는 그림 조각(종이, 캔버스, 물감 등으로 이루어진) 이 개인과 사회적, 정신적 질서 및 감정과 감성이 내재되어 의미를 품은 가치의 상징인 하나의 작품으로 변모한다.
개인의 이야기에서 출발하여 사회적 담론에 이르기까지 작가들은 끊임없이 질문과 반문을 던지며 답을 구한다. 예술이라는 미명아래 관념을 실체로 표현하기 위해 예술적 갈등을 겪으며 명확성 보다 불명확성이 큰 비중을 차지하는 삶을 살아가는 작가들에게 존경을 표하며 ⟪Cycle :: 순환•주기⟫ 展을 기획하였다.

Cycle :: Circulation·Cycle
In French, the term “cycle” refers to “circulation” or “cycle,” and in music, it denotes a set of related pieces that revolve around a central theme or idea. While each piece can be performed independently, experiencing the entire cycle often helps in fully understanding the overarching theme or concept. We believe that such an experience is also essential to fully grasp a single artist and their exhibition. Thus, we have borrowed the musical term “cycle” to provide a broader opportunity for art appreciation.
Unlike exhibitions that focus primarily on recent works, the ⟪Cycle :: Circulation·Cycle⟫ exhibition selects pieces from each artist’s body of work spanning from the early 2000s to the present. Through these works, which embody the artists’ evolving and concentrated thoughts over an extended period, we can experience the results of their artistic processes.
Through the ⟪Cycle :: Circulation·Cycle⟫ exhibition, Gallery Woo invites viewers to experience the artistic journeys of Mayuka Yamamoto, Han ChoongSeok, and newly introduced artist Tamara Muller. These artists create visual languages by imbuing materials with meaning according to their unique internal orders. Due to each artist’s distinct order, what would otherwise be ordinary materials—such as the paper, canvas, and paint used in their works—transcend their physical form to become symbols of value, infused with personal, social, and emotional order, as well as sensitivity and sentiment.
Starting from personal stories and expanding into social discourse, these artists continually pose questions and seek answers, expressing their ideas in concrete form under the guise of art. In a world where ambiguity often outweighs clarity, we honor these artists who confront artistic conflicts and live such complex lives. It is with this respect that we have curated the ⟪Cycle :: Circulation·Cycle⟫ exhibition.
