한충석 작가의 개인전 《이 땅에 서기 위하여》 

너무 빨리 어른이 된 아이가 진정한 어른이 되어가는 과정

1997년, 대한민국은 IMF 외환위기라는 전례 없는 경제적 고난을 겪었습니다. 하지만 우리는 그 시절을 종종 ‘고난 속의 낭만’으로 기억합니다.
맨발의 투혼으로 LPGA 우승을 차지한 박세리, 양희은의 상록수가 흐르던 공익광고, 전국을 뜨겁게 달군 금모으기 운동—
그 모든 풍경은 “함께 이겨낸 시대”라는 이름으로 남았습니다.

그러나 그 낭만의 이면에는 너무 빨리 어른이 되어야 했던 아이들이 있었습니다.
그리고 한충석은 그 아이의 시선으로부터 이야기를 시작합니다.

한충석은 20여 년 동안 꾸준히 그림을 그려왔습니다.
그는 그 시간 중 단 2년은 자신의 정체성에 대해 고민했고, 나머지는 ‘관계’에 대해 고민했다고 말합니다.
그의 작업은 감정의 거리, 눈치, 조용한 생존의 태도 등 인간관계의 미묘한 결을 정직하게 담아냅니다.

작품 속 인물들은 눈치를 보되 휘둘리지 않으며, 조용히 단단하게 서 있습니다.
그들의 시선은 불안보다는 따뜻함을 향하고, 감정은 절제 속에 머뭅니다.

이번 전시는 작가의 철학적 내면이자 자화상이며, 우리 모두가 겪어온
‘너무 빨리 어른이 된 시간’에 대한 조용한 기록이자 회복의 여정입니다.
관계 속에서 흔들릴지라도, 결국 다시 잘 서기 위한 과정을 통과해가는 이야기입니다.

‘관계’

우린 가끔 스스로에게 얼마나 깊어져야 하는지를 묻습니다.

바다의 깊이를 알려고 하면 바다는 파도로 대답합니다.
삶은 파도를 보라 얘기합니다. 아니, 파도로 들어가 보라 합니다.
바다를 향한 망막의 기쁨은 뒤로하고 파도로 향합니다.
앞선 자들이 파도로 들어가 밀쳐지고 흔들리는 걸 보며 전 말합니다. 중심을 잡고 잘 서 있으라 말합니다.
하지만 이내 몸이 젖는 것과 가벼운 파도에도 휘청이는 나는 알게 되었습니다.
내가 젖고 흔들리고 기울어져 그들도 그렇게 보였다는 것을요.

다시 잘 일어서서 보니, 그들은 이미 잘 서 있었습니다.
우리는 늘 파도를 만납니다. 그리고 흔들리며 잘 서 있게 됩니다.
파도는 늘 있습니다. 그리고 우리도 잘 서 있습니다.

Han Choong-seok: To Stand on This Land

A journey of a child who grew up too fast, becoming an adult in the truest sense.

In 1997, Korea was hit by an unprecedented economic crisis the IMF financial crisis.

Yet, strangely, many of us recall that time as an era of “romance amidst hardship.”

Se Ri Pak winning the LPGA in her bare feet, the patriotic PSA backed by Yang Hee-eun’s “Evergreen”, and the nationwide gold collecting movement These images remain in our collective memory as symbols of a nation that overcame together.

But beneath that sentimentality were the children who had to grow up too quickly.

And it is through their eyes that Han Choong-seok begins his story.

For over two decades, Han has painted consistently.

He often says that only two of those years were spent searching for his own identity

The rest were spent thinking deeply about relationships.

His work captures the delicate fabric of human connection with honesty The emotional distance, quiet survival, the act of reading the room.

The figures in his paintings are watchful, yet unshaken.

They stand still and quietly resilient.

Their gaze leans not toward fear, but toward warmth.

Their emotions remain steady restrained, but present.

This exhibition is both a philosophical self portrait and a quiet chronicle of what we’ve all lived through The time we were forced to grow up too soon.

It is a gentle path toward restoration A reminder that even when shaken by relationships,

we find our way back to standing firm.

To Stand on This Land

“Relationships”

At times, we ask ourselves how deep must we go to truly know ourselves?

When we seek to measure the depth of the sea, the sea responds with waves.

Life tells us not just to look at the waves but to enter them.

Setting aside the distant joy of merely gazing at the ocean, we step into its waves.

Seeing those ahead of us pushed and shaken by the water,

I once said to them:

“Hold your center. Stand strong.”

But soon, I too was soaked.

And even a gentle wave made me stagger.

It was then I realized:

They looked that way to me only because I, too, was wavering.

Once I regained my balance and stood again,

I saw they had been standing strong all along.

Waves will always come.

And we will, always, stand again.
